John Powell (1930 – 2025)

With immense sadness, we share the news that John Francis Powell, at the age of 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at his home in Santa Ynez, California, with his devoted wife and beloved sons at his side.

He was born on November 28, 1930, in Los Angeles, California, to Marjorie and Jack Powell. A graduate of Hollywood High School, John served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954, spending two years stationed in Japan.

After returning home, he worked a variety of jobs—at Gladding McBean Pottery, as a greensman in the Hollywood studios, and as an oil painter. During this period, he spent many memorable hours with friends at Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood, in the company of artists such as Dane Dixon, Ed Kienholz, and John Altoon.

In his late 20s, John was hired by Los Angeles architect George MacLean as his assistant. Together, they traveled the world collecting antiques and artifacts for their projects, experiences that immersed John in visually rich cultures and profoundly influenced his future work as an artist. While working with George, they designed homes for notable figures including Elizabeth Taylor and D.K. Ludwig. John eventually managed MacLean Antiques, where he met his future wife, Wendy, and transitioned into a full-time career as an oil painter.

Much of John’s artwork reflected his travels and the many influences of his earlier life. Over the past 50 years, he created his unique “visions of paradise,” which continue to bring joy to many. He once said:

“I always knew I wanted to be an artist. As I look back at the hours I’ve stood before my easel, facing the miles and miles of blank canvas and attempting to express the visions in my mind, I realize how many people and experiences have shaped the inspiration and focus of each completed canvas. Of course, ‘completed’ is relative… when is a canvas truly completed?”

John was represented by DeVille Galleries in Beverly Hills where he worked alongside his lifelong friend and the namesake of his oldest son, Christian Title. John was also represented by Beacon Fine Arts Gallery in Red Bank, New Jersey, and The Christina Gallery in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. His work was also exhibited in Japan, where his shows were well attended and warmly received. These opportunities allowed him to establish a successful career and name for himself in the art world.

One of the greatest honors of his artistic life came in 1996, when he was named Artist of the Year by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).

John was a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Wendy; his daughter Jennifer (deceased); two sons Christian and Jesse, their wives Nahrin and Ashley; and four grandchildren—Eli, Mara, Sammy, and Parker—all deeply loved by him.

The Christina Gallery welcomes landscape artist Mark Shasha

“Outward Bound” by Mark Shasha

We are very excited to welcome American landscape artist Mark Shasha to the gallery. Mark Shasha (b. 1961) is an award-winning American artist, author and educator. His focus is light and texture in the natural world which he approaches in a traditional style with techniques of 19th and 20th century masters. His work has appeared in museums, galleries, and publications for 40 years. Mark’s paintings are found in public and private collections around the world.

Mark grew up on the Connecticut coast and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1983 Shasha was a frequent illustrator for the Boston Phoenix, The Globe and other publications. His first children’s book, Night of the Moonjellies (Simon & Schuster, 1992) won a Marion Vannett Ridgway Honor Award and was welcomed by Smithsonian Magazine as a classic. It continues to appear on bestseller lists.

His work led to invitations to hundreds of schools and libraries where he delighted children with his stories, songs and drawings. In recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the education of young people” Mark was the recipient of the Shining Star Award by The Children’s Museum of Southeastern Connecticut.

He is a frequent award winner in notable art events across the country including Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, Plein Air Easton, Laguna Plein Air Invitational and En Plein Air Texas. Shasha is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and an elected member of The Salmagundi Club, The Guild of Boston Artists, The Copley Society, Rockport Art Association & Museum, North Shore Arts Association and other venerable art institutions.

Mark’s recent awards include the 2021 Museum Purchase Award given by The San Angelo Museum of Art, Easton Artist’s Choice Award, Oil Painters of America Award of Excellence and The Alden Bryan Memorial Award for Excellence in Landscape Painting (twice in one year).

Shasha often appears on stage as an actor and singer. Recent roles include Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Best of Broadway, The Miracle Worker, Twelve Angry Men and Willy in Willy Wonka. He also sings with the Hillyer Orchestra in Salem, Massachusetts.

“Painting is a calling for me. It is a longing for those moments when poetry happens when a sun beam caresses a snowbank, peeks into a glade or spills diamonds across the sea. I’m compelled by something deep in me to seize that energy and to express it as paint on canvas using my own calligraphy and the brevity of a few accurate brushstrokes. My reward is to have the viewer linger, to understand, to share as the canvas evokes and conveys a glimmer of that sublime natural beauty all around us.”

The Christina Gallery Welcomes Kelly Carmody to the gallery

We are excited to welcome classically trained artist Kelly Carmody to the gallery. Kelly grew up in Topsfield, MA, and attended the Massachusetts College of Art in the mid-1990s. She furthered her studies at the Art Students League in New York City and the studio of Numael Pulido (1939-2022), where he taught her how to convey light on form. This understanding of how to portray light in a painting is fundamental to Kelly’s work. Pulido’s wife, Shirley Pulido (1932-2020), was also a tremendous influence. She taught Kelly how to use value and temperature relationships to create balance and interest in her paintings. [Read more…] about The Christina Gallery Welcomes Kelly Carmody to the gallery

Impressionist E. J. Paprocki, who joined the gallery in 2020, recently visited Martha’s Vineyard to paint “en plein air” or in the open air. It was his first visit to Martha’s Vineyard, and he promises it will not be his last! “Martha’s Vineyard was, in a word, inspiring. Never have all the visual elements I like to incorporate into my paintings come together in a single location. No editing was needed – I painted what I experienced.” [Read more…] about E. J. The 2021 Season at The Christina Gallery

As we begin the gallery’s 44th season here in Edgartown, we are grateful to continue to do what we love – share our unique art collection with you. This season will be a busy one as pandemic restrictions relax and people move around a bit more.

“Sengy Sunset Reflections” by Marjorie Mason

We are incredibly excited to announce our 2021 Summer Exhibition with Marjorie Mason. Her 2020 exhibition, “Vineyard Landscapes,” was a complete sell-out, so we anticipate another great collection from Marjorie for this season. As was the case last year, we will not host an artists’ reception but plan to feature her collection on the gallery’s main floor beginning on July 1, 2021, and throughout the summer. Elizabeth Mumford (1949 – 2020)

It is with immense sadness that we share the news of the passing of Elizabeth Mumford on September 13, 2020. For more than ten years, Liz fought a difficult battle against cancer. She remained hopeful and never gave in, but eventually, her body could not take anymore. We have sent our sympathies to Liz’s son, Sam, and her family.

Liz joined the gallery in 2003, and her whimsical folk art paintings were admired by many. Her paintings were very distinctive with their black borders, gold scallop corners, and clever phrases in red. Liz loved the relationship between folk art and storytelling, a pastime she enjoyed, and its nostalgic connection to simpler times. [Read more…] about Elizabeth Mumford (1949 – 2020)

Celebrating our 42nd season in our new home at 5 Winter Street

June has arrived and so has the start of our 42nd season here in Edgartown on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. We are now open in our new home at 5 Winter Street, which coincidentally is the same location we opened the gallery in 1977. We have come full circle and are enjoying seeing familiar faces as they come to visit.
