This original nautical chart of the Chesapeake Bay Sheet No. 1, dated 1857, is from the U.S. Coast Survey collection. The area of the chart is from the head of the Bay to the mouth of the Magothy River. The city of Baltimore is detailed on the left hand side of the chart. These charts were intended for navigational purposes by sea captains and included information relative to tides, soundings, lighthouses, sailing directions with noted danger areas and other pertinent data. This chart is tinted and in good condition with some minor foxing on the fold lines. The framing is done to conservation standards with an attractive burl wood frame.
