This original nautical chart of Santa Barbara, dated 1853, is from the U.S. Coast Survey collection. In the lower left corner is an engraving of a coastal view of the town of Santa Barbara. These charts were intended for navigational purposes by sea captains and included information relative to tides, soundings, lighthouses, sailing directions with noted danger areas and other pertinent data. This chart is tinted and in good condition with some minor foxing on the fold lines. The framing is done to conservation standards with an attractive burl wood frame.
