This original map of Amerique Septentrionale, dated 1683, is by Alain Mallet (1630 – 1706). This map is from the French edition of his Description de L’Univers and shows the continent of North America, with several interesting depictions, including California as an island, the Great Lakes as one body of water and a very large area for Virginia. The title is in a drape-style cartouche and the border with latitude and longitude shown. This map is the first state as noted by the inclusion of the Barania River in Mexico and is in good condition. The framing is done to conservation standards with a museum mat and carved gold frame.
