This set of three original nautical charts of Monomoy & Nantucket Shoals to Block Island, dated 1869, are from the U.S. Coast Survey collection. The left chart depicts the northern tip of Block Island and the Rhode Island coastline with the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The middle chart depicts the continuation of the coastline, the Elizabeth Islands and Martha’s Vineyard. The right chart depicts the continuation of the coastline, Monomoy Shoals and Nantucket. These charts were intended for navigational purposes by sea captains and included information relative to tides, soundings, lighthouses, sailing directions with noted danger areas and other pertinent data. These charts are tinted and in good condition with some minor foxing on the fold lines. The framing is done to conservation standards with an attractive burl wood frames.
