Nicolaes Visscher 1618-1679

Nicolaes Visscher (1618 – 1679) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher.  His father, C.J. Visscher, founded the family business, beginning a tradition of important art dealers and map publishers for more than a century.

Following his father’s death in 1652, Nicolaes took over the family business.  He finished and published a collection of maps and atlases that his father had begun, only later creating works under his own name.  With the help of his own son, he produced a number of engravings and atlases.  Among these published works are America, Altas Contractus, Atlas Minor, and Germania Inferior, works which included over 170 boards.  In addition to producing his own engravings, Visscher compiled a number of atlases made up of maps created by other cartographers.
