Yves Parent (1941 – 2011)

Yves Parent was born in Normandy, France in 1941. He is a graduate of Paris University and the Institut d’ Etudes Politiques with a degree in law and political science.   He spent several years in the French Civil Service, stationed on the Ile de la Reunion in the Indian Ocean.  From 1969 to 1984, he was the owner and manager of a mineral water company in Sainte Marguerite, Auvergne.

Yves’ art education probably started with looking over the shoulder of his mother, who was an art teacher.  However, he does consider himself a self-taught artist and always has his art materials with him.

Yves has a keen interest in sailing.  He has sailed across the Atlantic seven times and once across the Pacific and around Cape Horn.  In 1978 and 1982, Yves sailed across the Atlantic alone.  Previously, he had crewed boats in offshore races from 1962 through 1966 and from 1969 through 1980, including eight Fastnet races.  Yves did a watercolor on location at   Cape Horn when he crewed aboard Kriter IX, the French entry in the ‘round the world’ race in 1981 and 1982.  It was after the 1982 race when he sailed up the East Coast and fell in love with New England.

Yves has been painting professionally since the mid 1980’s.    He paints seascapes in watercolor and most recently has started to paint with oils which he finds to be challenging and exciting.  He excels in the portrayal of placid water dotted with boats, all in the most delicate of colors.

For many years, Yves spent May through September on the East Coast.  He would sail his sloop into various harbors and paint on site.  In 1993, he made a major change in his life by moving to Connecticut where he still resides.  Yves travels during the winter months to the Caribbean Islands and stays in many different ports, where he finds tremendous inspiration for his paintings.

Yves has been an invited artist at the International Marine Art Exhibition at the Mystic Maritime Gallery in Connecticut.    He is an Artist Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the Salmagundi Club in New York.
