George Thibault

George Thibault (which is pronounced TEE-bo) has been an island resident and artist since his arrival here in 1982.  Born in August of 1937, in a small New Hampshire town, George began his early years working in a furniture factory.  Yet, he was always able to find time to doodle and draw which impressed many classmates and friends along the way. Appreciation for George’s works began to increase exponentially as his love of the arts did. At the age of twenty, George moved to Boston and became a busboy.

This busboy, however, differentiated himself by visiting Boston’s art galleries and museums during his few spare hours.

As fate would have it, the island and her beauty enticed George, as it has so many of us. As a result, he settled here and began to paint the land and the seascapes that mesmerize us all.

Painting whenever he could, George filled his walls at home with his paintings. Friends showed much interest in his originals. Being a fair and gracious man, George was touched that his friends wanted their own “Georges” and he would charge no more than he felt he put into them.

Finally with the support of those around him, at the young age of forty, George’s confidence grew. With this new found courage, he began taking lessons from local and nationally recognized artists such as Fred Messersmith and Ray Ellis.

In 1992, George Thibault had his first show in a local gallery, and it was a great success.  Not allowing his success to influence him, to this day George has drawn a line financially on the price of his work. He truly believes that “if someone wants their own piece of my art, they should not have to pay a fortune to own it”.

George’s smooth style and appreciation for detail as made his pieces highly collectable. Today, George still believes you can never learn too much about a thing you love. In George’s life, and for our pleasure, his love is painting and his home is the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.
